The Story of Soar: From Lost Egg to Community Hero

Every hero has an origin story, and ours begins with a lost egg and a big heart.

One crisp spring morning, a Newark Animal Control Officer was responding to a routine call near the edge of town when she stumbled upon something extraordinary: a lone eagle egg, nestled in the grass with no nest or parent in sight. Understanding the importance of protecting wildlife, the ACO gently secured the egg and brought it back to safety, vowing to care for it until it could be raised and released.

Days turned into weeks, and under the watchful eye of Newark Police Officers, the egg remained warm and protected. Then, one day, the egg hatched. Out came a tiny, wide-eyed eagle—curious, full of energy, and immediately a favorite among the team. The department rallied to help raise the little eagle, ensuring he grew strong, confident, and ready to soar. Once he was strong enough, he was released back into the wild. However, the eagle kept returning to the department to spend time soaring above the station and spending time with his officer family.

As he grew, it became clear that this eagle wasn’t just any bird; he had a spark, a spirit, and a natural connection with people, especially children. Officers noted how he loved visiting the station, attending community events, and playfully engaging with the public. He had a gift for bringing smiles and making connections wherever he went.

When he was ready, the eagle (Soar) made it official and joined the Newark Police Department. Officer Soar was sworn in as a member of our department, proudly joining the ranks of the Community Engagement Unit and the Newark Police Athletic League (PAL). His mission? To serve as a symbol of positivity, connection, and fun. Whether he’s high-fiving kids at school visits, leading a parade, or dancing at a block party, Soar is a beloved figure in Newark.

Today, Soar proudly wears his badge—not to enforce laws but to inspire trust, spread joy, and remind us that community is at the heart of policing. His story is one of care, compassion, and commitment—a perfect match for the values we hold dear at the Newark Police Department.

And wherever there are kids to engage, smiles to bring, or hope to lift, Soar will be there watching from above and always ready to help Newark fly a little higher.

Special Thanks

A heartfelt thank you to all who helped bring Soar to life!

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Delaware Criminal Justice Council for covering all of Soar’s adoption fees with a grant and to the Newark Morning Rotary for their generous support in funding the design of his official uniform. Special thanks to Character Translations for tailoring a custom uniform that fits a non-human police officer, and to Dave Raymond’s Mascot Bootcamp for providing Soar with the top-tier training needed to serve as Newark’s newest community ambassador.

Together, you’ve helped us give flight to a one-of-a-kind member of the Newark Police Department!
